DSM 5-TR: Breaking It Down Part 1

We will provide an overview of the key diagnostic developments and changes in the DSM from its inception to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR). The DSM offers a standardized language for clinicians to communicate regarding their patients and ensures consistent and reliable diagnoses, as stated by the American Psychiatric Association.

Significant diagnostic advancements in the Text Revision include the reintroduction of Mood Disorders, the incorporation of ICD-10 codes for Suicidal Behavior and Nonsuicidal Self-Injury, and the addition of Prolonged Grief Disorder, among others. These updates are accompanied by diagnostic revisions or clarifications for numerous additional disorders, alongside a more comprehensive focus on issues of race, equity, and discrimination.
